First solo album by Ex Hole/Smashing Pumpkins member Melissa Auf Der Mer. I'd been waiting to buy this, putting it off a bit, seeing if I could get a copy cheap at Easy Street or Silver Platters, but then I remembered Amazon always has a good deal, and they had a copy for less than a buck (not including shipping). It's actually a great album, taking lots of cues from different sounds (a little shoegaze, rock, metal, "alternative"), and getting pretty lucky with it if you ask me. Taking too many sounds can always make a record be a little to thin on anything, but Ms. Auf Der Maur makes it work surprisingly well. The opening track, "Lightning Is My Girl" is good, but "Followed The Waves" should have been the opener, methinks. This is WAY better than Hole (not a hard to achieve), but you wouldn't be wrong in assuming that this was the opening act for them in the 90's though. It's got a bit of that throwback sound to it. It's not that derivative or anything, just harkens back to that time. I wish the production were not as pristine though, I have a feeling I would love this if it was a bit rougher around the edges. There's a second album out there, but it's kinda new and therefore not as cheap, so I wait....12 songs makes the count at 17740...
