Beat Happenings' "Jamboree" is either one of the most irritating albums you've ever heard or one of the coolest, depending on who you ask. I favour the latter. But I grew up here, saw them more than a few times, always enjoyed their shows and their whole vibe. They sort of captured that feeling you had as a teenager when you reminisced about your days as a kid, when you were more carefree, everything seemed easier and brighter. Beat Happening weren't lamenting this, they were trying to recreate the feeling again as post adolescents. Beat Happening used to get the opening spot for Fugazi a lot up in the NW, at least for a few times. I definitely remember that. This isn't their best album, that honor goes to "Dreamy", but this one has their big hit "Indian Summer", which has been covered by a lot of people, one of my favorite Beat Happenings songs. Not that this album is a slouch by any means. It's kind of sad that no one really remembers Beat Happening anymore; they were a great band whose legacy should be revered like Sonic Youth's or the Replacements or Fugazi's. I found this copy at Easy Street in the .99 cent bin. I'm definitely going to be getting their discography now....11 songs makes the count at 17618....
I found Beat Happening incredibly irritating until maybe the past couple of years. I now understand why people were so into them.
ReplyDeleteThey were definitely better live than recorded...
