300th Post...

I picked up the Monster X discography on the Discogs website used for $6 ppd. A steal if you ask me. I have most of this stuff already, but it's nice to have it all in one place too. Infamously dubbed a "Straight Edge Grind Band", Monster X was (to me) a real breath of fresh air coming out of a really stagnant time for sXe. Their songs touched on subjects like legalising drugs, being pro choice, attacking Krishna Conscious bands like 108, Shelter, and The Cro Mags for using Hardcore to recruit kids to their cause. Heady stuff, not your typical "stabbed in the back" songs! I don't know if I would necessarily call Monster X a grind band; the tempo isn't quite up to par with Terrorizer, Brutal Truth, Assuck, or the like. But they were a faster than normal sXe band with the "cookie monster" vocals who had some pretty good ideas in their head. This collects everything they ever did. My fave tracks are "The Gift"; the song off of the Ebulliton straight edge comp, and the classic "Take A Walk", the one attacking Shelter and Krishan Conscious type bands, carrying on in the fine tradition of bands like Born Against, and Slapshot in saying that religion has no place in hardcore. I was burning with indignation at the thought of that type of stuff when I was younger, but now I realize I never really had to deal with that stuff, and to be honest, if you don't want to, you can just walk away.

45 songs makes the count at 17663....

  1. I just pulled out a Monster X record this week.

They were an anomaly. And I enjoyed them. I still do.

  2. Their "beef" with 108 seems hilarious to me now....

  3. Keep in mind, 108 is one of my favorite bands. And I love Shelter, Prema and Cro-Mags.

But Monster X had a point.
