The Divinyls. A one hit wonder. But wow, what a discography. You would be forgiven if you thought that their only album was the self titled one. I was. Hanging out with an older dude, Ken, he was playing this album, "Desperate" and I was totally curious who it was. When he told me, I was blown away. Christine Amphlett's voice sounds tough and vulnerable at the same time, I was a little obsessed with her when the "I touch Myself" single came out. I loved her look, her imperfect teeth, everything. I was 16, what can I say? "Desperate" is their first album, coming out all the way back in 1982. It has that sort of rock meets new wave sound. You know what I'm talking about; when guys like Tom Petty and the Cars and had elements of both. It sounds forced in some cases (Tom Petty), but in the case of the Divinyls; perfectly natural. The Divinyls could not catch a break overseas, being nothing more than an obscure oddity at best in the US. A shame really as Christine Amphlett as evidenced by some Youtube footage. Not a single clunker on this album, it's a pretty intense affair. If you like early Pretenders, this would be a good album for you, although, Chrissy Hynde's voice pales in comparison to Amphletts' in my opinion. I love the tracks "Ring Me Up" "Siren (Never Let You Go)", and "Science Fiction" the best, but honestly, not a bad track on the entire album. I found my copy at Easy Street, a remastered version, so not as cheap as I wanted ($8), but a good deal nonetheless....10 songs makes the count at 17541...
