I've been away for a bit. Took a vacation, got out of the city, smelled the roses, slept in, stayed the night in cheap motels, it was nice. Back to the real world though. On my trip, I picked up a cheap copy ($1.50!) a copy of Porno For Pyros first self titled album at a flea market. If you aren't aware, this was Perry Farrell's post Jane's Addiction project. I was never the hugest fan of Jane's Addiction, just not my thing. But when this album came out, that song of theirs, "Pets" was being played a lot, so was that video. I was pretty down with that song, but never bought the album. I didn't want to spend the $14-16 dollars for just one track that I liked, no matter how good. Fast forward 19 years and you can get this pretty much anywhere for under $3. To be honest, I'm glad that I didn't buy this back then, it's good, but with the exception of a few REALLY great tracks (Cursed Female, Pets, Black Girlfriend, Orgasm), it can be a bit grating. Perry Farrell's doesn't have a lot of range on here. It's pretty much the same vocal inflections on every song. The psychedelic guitars are cool, the drumming by Stephen Perkins is really good, but the funky slap bass parts along with the bongo drums sound so dated, so corny. All those undesirable parts really sink the song "Packin' .25", which besides the bongos and funky slap bass parts could have been awesome. If they had been left out, I think I would love this album even more. But still, it's a great album to spin from time to time.
11 songs makes the count at 17421....
