Idaho. A band that is so rarely mentioned by anyone, you wonder if they are even together anymore. They've just released a new album which I had just casually heard about and I wondered what Idaho material albums I had in my collection. None. Damn. More albums lost in the divorce. Foolish me for not fighting for them more. Luckily Easy Street had a flood of Idaho albums in their used bin. I cleaned up! The first one I grabbed was their 4th album "Alas", which is pretty smack dab in the middle of their Discography. Pretty representative of their sound too. If you like Codeine, Red House Painters, Low, etc...you should love Idaho. Slow, meandering, deliberately paced music, played on a 4 string guitar (never heard of that!), slurred sleepy sounding vocals, all the songs are pretty maudlin, creating a pretty great atmosphere. I loved this when it came out, some magazine, I don't remember which one, it was one of those free ones that were always in Tower records (RIP), always was talking about how amazing Idaho were, I decided to take a chance and bought "Alas". I was pretty enraptured with Codeine at this point, so I fell in love with Idaho. This one is still my favorite too, it has Melissa Auf Der Mer of Hole singing backups on "Tensile" and "Yesterday's Unwinding", which makes the dreamy passages all that more hypnotic. I can't sing Idaho's praises enough, it seems their albums have flooded the used bins, do yourself a favour, pick up any one of them for a test drive, if you like "slowcore" (I hate that term), this will be right up your alley. I'm looking for the new one on Friday....
